Description
Handwoven wool flatweave dhurrie rug in a slate blue-grey plaid, with
periwinkle bands, ivory stripes and deep red squares set at every crossing.
It is a true flatweave — no pile, no backing, and reversible, so it lies
almost flush with the floor and clears low doorways without bunching.

WHY A FLATWEAVE
A flatweave is woven rather than knotted or tufted, which means the pattern
is built into the structure of the rug itself instead of sitting on a
backing. The result is a low-profile rug that is light enough to lift and
shake out, easy to layer, and genuinely reversible — flip it and you get an
even wear pattern and a second face with the same design. It is the right
construction for rooms that get walked through rather than lounged in.

MATERIALS & CRAFTSMANSHIP
Woven on a pit loom in Bhadohi, India, a weaving region working in flatweave
and hand-knotted rugs for generations. The weft is packed tightly by hand
row by row, which is what gives the colour blocks their clean, crisp edges —
each red square and ivory stripe is woven in place, never printed or
applied. Colours are dyed before weaving, so the tone runs all the way
through the yarn. A single mid-size piece takes a weaver several days at the
loom.

STYLING & PLACEMENT
The muted blue-grey ground keeps this quiet enough for a living room but the
red gives it a point of interest, so it works in Scandinavian, modern
farmhouse, coastal and mid-century interiors, and softens a minimal room
without competing with it. In a living room, size up so the front legs of
your sofa and chairs sit on the rug — 5x8 ft for a compact seating area,
8x10 ft for a full sofa-and-armchairs arrangement. A 5x8 ft sits well at the
foot of a queen bed; 8x10 ft runs either side of a queen and 9x12 ft suits a
king. For a six-seat dining table, choose 8x10 ft so chairs stay on the rug
when pulled out. The flat profile also makes it a practical choice for
entryways, hallways and under a desk chair.

GIFTING
Its neutral base and small red accent make it an easy housewarming or
new-home gift — it reads considered without needing to match someone's
existing palette exactly.

CARE, VARIATION & LONGEVITY
Vacuum with suction only — no beater bar, which can pull at flatweave
threads. Spot clean spills promptly with a damp cloth and mild detergent;
professional cleaning for anything larger. Flatweaves shed very little
compared with pile rugs. A non-slip rug pad is strongly recommended: it
stops the rug sliding, protects the weave from friction and adds a little
underfoot cushioning. Because each piece is woven by hand, expect slight
variation in size (roughly 1–2%) and small differences in colour and weave
between pieces — this is the mark of a handmade rug, not a flaw. Rotate it
twice a year for even wear; a well-cared-for flatweave lasts many years in
regular household use.

FAQ
Q: Is this hand-knotted or tufted?
A: Neither — it is a handwoven flatweave dhurrie, woven on a loom with no
pile and no glued backing.

Q: Will it shed?
A: Minimal shedding. Flatweaves have no cut pile, so you will not get the
fluff that new tufted rugs produce.

Q: Is it reversible?
A: Yes. Both faces carry the pattern, so you can flip it to even out wear.

Q: Is it pet and kid friendly?
A: Yes. There is no pile for claws to catch in and the flat surface is easy
to wipe and vacuum. Pull any snagged thread flat rather than cutting it.

Q: Does it come with a rug pad?
A: A pad is not included. We recommend a non-slip pad, especially on
hardwood or tile.

Q: Will the colours match what I see on screen?
A: Very closely, but screens vary. The blue-grey can read slightly cooler or
warmer depending on your display and your room's light. Message us for
additional photos before you order.

Q: How long does a custom size take?
A: Custom pieces are woven to order — message us with your dimensions and we
will confirm timing and price.

Questions, Answered

Everything you want to know before you buy

Handmade rugs raise real questions — about wool, shedding, sizing and shipping. Here are ours, answered plainly.

Can I order a custom size or colour?
Are your rugs safe for pets and children?
Do I need a rug pad underneath it?
How should I clean and care for my rug?
Do wool rugs shed, and for how long?
Can I order a custom size or colour?

Yes. Almost everything we make can be woven to your dimensions and palette, including round, runner and oversized pieces. Custom orders take about 4-6 weeks. Send us your measurements and a colour reference to start.

Are your rugs safe for pets and children?

Yes. Our rugs are crafted using natural wool and non-toxic dyes without chemical-backed coatings. Wool is naturally stain-resistant and flame-resistant, making it a great choice for family homes. If a loop is accidentally pulled by a pet, simply trim it carefully with scissors rather than pulling it.

Do I need a rug pad underneath it?

We highly recommend using one. A quality rug pad helps prevent slipping, protects your flooring, adds extra comfort underfoot, and extends the lifespan of your rug by reducing wear from daily foot traffic. It's especially beneficial on hardwood, tile, and other smooth surfaces.

How should I clean and care for my rug?

Vacuum weekly on a low setting. Blot spills immediately with a dry cloth — press, don't rub. For anything that has set, use a professional rug cleaner. Avoid soaking the rug, bleach, and steam cleaning.

Do wool rugs shed, and for how long?

Yes, light shedding is normal during the first few weeks. These are loose fibers left from the finishing process and will gradually reduce with regular use. Vacuum gently using a suction-only setting (without a rotating beater bar), and shedding typically settles within about a month. It is a natural characteristic of quality wool rugs.

No question matches that. Message us and we'll answer it directly.
