Description
Handwoven blue wool flatweave rug with a red and ivory grid check pattern — a
low-profile dhurrie built on a pale sky-blue field, crossed by periwinkle bands
and ivory stripes with a deep red square at every intersection. It is woven flat
on the loom, so it lies flush against the floor, sits cleanly under doors and
furniture legs, and works in rooms where a thick pile rug would feel heavy.

WHY A FLATWEAVE
A flatweave has no pile and no latex backing. The pattern is built into the weave
itself rather than punched into a backing cloth, which makes the rug light,
reversible, easy to lift and shake out, and well suited to entryways, kitchens,
dining rooms and homes with pets or kids. It gives you a graphic, architectural
floor rather than a plush one — that is the trade-off, and it is the right one
for high-traffic space.

MATERIALS & CRAFTSMANSHIP
Woven in wool by hand on a traditional loom in the Bhadohi weaving belt of India,
a region that has produced handmade rugs for generations in our family. Each
colour block is placed by hand, weft by weft — the grid you see is counted and
beaten in by the weaver, not printed or stamped. Wool is dyed in small batches,
so tone can shift very slightly between production runs. A rug this size takes an
experienced weaver several weeks at the loom.

STYLING & PLACEMENT
The cool blue field with a red accent reads Scandinavian, coastal, modern farmhouse
and mid-century interiors, and it sits well against light oak, white walls and
natural linen. In a living room, choose a size that lets at least the front legs
of your sofa and chairs sit on the rug — 8x10 ft for a standard three-seat
arrangement, 6x9 ft for a smaller apartment layout. For a queen bed, 8x10 ft
placed under the lower two-thirds gives walking room on both sides. For a
six-seat dining table, 8x10 ft keeps chairs on the rug when pulled out. The flat
profile also makes it a good choice for a hallway or a kitchen run.

GIFTING
A calm, graphic rug is an easy housewarming or new-home gift when you know the
room but not the taste — the palette is neutral enough to live with, and the red
gives it character.

CARE, VARIATION & LONGEVITY
Vacuum with suction only — no beater bar, which can catch a flatweave. Spot clean
with mild soap and cold water; professional cleaning for anything deeper. Shedding
is minimal compared to a tufted rug because there is no cut pile. Rotate every six
months to even out sun and foot traffic. Expect slight variation in colour and up
to 2 percent in finished size — this is handwoven, not machine-cut. Use a thin
non-slip pad underneath: it stops the rug sliding, adds a little cushioning, and
meaningfully extends its life. Cared for, a wool flatweave will last well over a
decade.

FAQ
Will it shed? Very little. There is no cut pile, so shedding is far lower than a
tufted or shag rug — expect only light fibre release in the first few weeks.

Is it reversible? Yes. The weave is flat and the pattern reads on both faces, with
the reverse slightly softer in contrast. Flip it to even out wear.

Is it pet and kid friendly? Yes. There are no loops to snag claws and no latex to
break down, and the low profile makes spills easier to reach and blot.

Does it come with a rug pad? No, a pad is not included. We recommend a thin
felt-and-rubber pad, which you can source locally to your exact size.

How long does made-to-order take? Custom sizes are woven after ordering — allow
roughly 3 to 5 weeks for weaving and finishing, plus shipping time.

Will the colours match my screen? Very closely, but screens vary. The field is a
soft grey-blue rather than a bright blue, and the red is deep and slightly brick,
not scarlet. Ask us for a daylight photo if you are matching to paint or fabric.

Need a size that isn't listed? Message us with your room measurements and we will
weave it to order.
Rug Care & Maintenance

Vacuum gently once or twice a week using a brush attachment — avoid rotary brush heads. Do not machine wash. For spills, blot immediately with a dry cloth; never rub. With simple care, your handmade wool rug will stay beautiful for decades.

Questions, Answered

Everything you want to know before you buy

Handmade rugs raise real questions — about wool, shedding, sizing and shipping. Here are ours, answered plainly.

Can I order a custom size or colour?
Are your rugs safe for pets and children?
Do I need a rug pad underneath it?
How should I clean and care for my rug?
Do wool rugs shed, and for how long?
Can I order a custom size or colour?

Yes. Almost everything we make can be woven to your dimensions and palette, including round, runner and oversized pieces. Custom orders take about 4-6 weeks. Send us your measurements and a colour reference to start.

Are your rugs safe for pets and children?

Yes. Our rugs are crafted using natural wool and non-toxic dyes without chemical-backed coatings. Wool is naturally stain-resistant and flame-resistant, making it a great choice for family homes. If a loop is accidentally pulled by a pet, simply trim it carefully with scissors rather than pulling it.

Do I need a rug pad underneath it?

We highly recommend using one. A quality rug pad helps prevent slipping, protects your flooring, adds extra comfort underfoot, and extends the lifespan of your rug by reducing wear from daily foot traffic. It's especially beneficial on hardwood, tile, and other smooth surfaces.

How should I clean and care for my rug?

Vacuum weekly on a low setting. Blot spills immediately with a dry cloth — press, don't rub. For anything that has set, use a professional rug cleaner. Avoid soaking the rug, bleach, and steam cleaning.

Do wool rugs shed, and for how long?

Yes, light shedding is normal during the first few weeks. These are loose fibers left from the finishing process and will gradually reduce with regular use. Vacuum gently using a suction-only setting (without a rotating beater bar), and shedding typically settles within about a month. It is a natural characteristic of quality wool rugs.

No question matches that. Message us and we'll answer it directly.
