Description
windowpane grid with one solid block filled in for balance. There is no pile
here — the surface is a flat, ribbed weave, so the pattern stays crisp and the
rug sits low enough to clear a door with room to spare. It is the kind of piece
that gives a quiet room a line to follow without adding colour to it.
WHY A FLATWEAVE
Flatweave means the design is woven directly into the structure of the rug
rather than sitting on top of it. There is no backing glued on and no pile to
crush, so the rug stays flat under furniture, wears evenly in walkways, and can
be turned over and used from either side. That reversibility effectively doubles
its life in a busy room. It is a lighter, lower-profile rug than a tufted or
knotted piece — easy to lift, easy to shake out, easy to move between rooms.
MATERIALS & CRAFTSMANSHIP
Woven by hand on a traditional pit loom in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh — a weaving
belt our family has worked in for three generations. The yarn is spun wool,
colour-matched in small dye lots so the charcoal reads as a soft, deep grey
rather than a flat printed black. The grid is not stencilled or stamped; each
line is laid in weft by weft as the weaver builds the field, which is why the
edges of the lines have a slight organic wobble under close inspection. A rug
this size takes a skilled weaver several days at the loom, followed by hand
finishing of the side edges and ends.

STYLING & PLACEMENT
The grid is a natural fit for Scandinavian, Japandi, mid-century modern and
warm-minimalist rooms, and it works especially well over pale oak, ash or
concrete floors where the charcoal lines do the contrast work.
Living room — 8 x 10 ft lets a three-seat sofa and two chairs sit with their
front legs on the rug. 5 x 8 ft suits a smaller apartment layout with the
coffee table centred and furniture off the rug.
Bedroom — 8 x 10 ft under a queen bed leaves walking margin on three sides;
9 x 12 ft does the same for a king. Alternatively run a 2.5 x 10 ft runner
along the side of the bed.
Dining — 8 x 10 ft fits a six-seat table and keeps chairs on the rug when
pulled out. Flatweave is a good choice here because chairs slide instead of
catching.
Hallway, kitchen galley, study, entryway — runners in the same weave.
CARE, VARIATION & LONGEVITY
Vacuum with the beater bar off or on a suction-only setting. Spot clean spills
promptly with cold water and a mild detergent, blotting rather than rubbing.
Professional cleaning once every year or two keeps the ivory ground bright.
Rotate the rug 180 degrees every six months so it wears evenly, and use a
non-slip felt or rubber pad underneath — flatweaves are light and will travel
on a smooth floor without one.
Wool flatweaves shed lightly for the first few weeks and then settle. Because
every piece is woven by hand, expect small variation in dye lot and a size
tolerance of roughly 1–2 percent against the listed dimensions. These are marks
of hand production, not defects. Cared for reasonably, a wool flatweave of this
weight gives well over a decade of use, and longer if you flip it.
FAQ
Will it shed?
Lightly at first, and only briefly. Flatweaves shed far less than pile rugs
because there are no cut fibre ends on the surface.
Is it safe with pets and kids?
Yes. There is no pile for claws to catch and no latex adhesive in the
construction. Pet hair also lifts off a flatweave more easily than off pile.
Is it reversible?
Yes. The grid appears on both faces, with the reverse reading slightly softer.
Does it come with a rug pad?
No, a pad is not included. We strongly recommend adding one — it stops slipping
and cushions a low-profile rug considerably.
How long does made-to-order take?
Standard sizes usually ship within a few days. Custom sizes are woven to order;
message us with your dimensions and we will confirm a timeline before you buy.
Will the colours match what I see on screen?
Very closely, but screens vary in warmth. The ivory is a natural undyed cream,
not a bright optical white, and the charcoal is a deep grey rather than jet
black. Ask us for a natural-light photo if you want to be certain.
Need a size that isn't listed? Message us — we weave custom dimensions,
and there is no charge to ask.
Rug Care & Maintenance
Vacuum gently once or twice a week using a brush attachment — avoid rotary brush heads. Do not machine wash. For spills, blot immediately with a dry cloth; never rub. With simple care, your handmade wool rug will stay beautiful for decades.

Questions, Answered
Everything you want to know before you buy
Handmade rugs raise real questions — about wool, shedding, sizing and shipping. Here are ours, answered plainly.
Can I order a custom size or colour?
Yes. Almost everything we make can be woven to your dimensions and palette, including round, runner and oversized pieces. Custom orders take about 4-6 weeks. Send us your measurements and a colour reference to start.
Are your rugs safe for pets and children?
Yes. Our rugs are crafted using natural wool and non-toxic dyes without chemical-backed coatings. Wool is naturally stain-resistant and flame-resistant, making it a great choice for family homes. If a loop is accidentally pulled by a pet, simply trim it carefully with scissors rather than pulling it.
Do I need a rug pad underneath it?
We highly recommend using one. A quality rug pad helps prevent slipping, protects your flooring, adds extra comfort underfoot, and extends the lifespan of your rug by reducing wear from daily foot traffic. It's especially beneficial on hardwood, tile, and other smooth surfaces.
How should I clean and care for my rug?
Vacuum weekly on a low setting. Blot spills immediately with a dry cloth — press, don't rub. For anything that has set, use a professional rug cleaner. Avoid soaking the rug, bleach, and steam cleaning.
Do wool rugs shed, and for how long?
Yes, light shedding is normal during the first few weeks. These are loose fibers left from the finishing process and will gradually reduce with regular use. Vacuum gently using a suction-only setting (without a rotating beater bar), and shedding typically settles within about a month. It is a natural characteristic of quality wool rugs.
No question matches that. Message us and we'll answer it directly.
