Description
Handwoven checkerboard flatweave rug in mustard, sky blue, burgundy and butter
cream. This is a true flatweave dhurrie — woven on the loom rather than tufted
or knotted — so it sits low and flat on the floor with no pile to crush, shed or
flatten under furniture. It brings a full colour story into a room without adding
bulk or height.

WHY A FLATWEAVE
A flatweave has no pile, which makes it the practical choice for rooms where a
thick rug gets in the way. It slides under a door that clears the floor by only a
centimetre or two, sits flat under dining chairs so legs don't catch, and vacuums
clean in a fraction of the time. The face is woven as one structure, so both
sides carry the pattern and the rug can be flipped to even out wear. Weight for
weight it costs less than a knotted or tufted rug of the same size, because the
technique is faster — not because the workmanship is thinner.

MATERIALS & CRAFTSMANSHIP
Woven in cotton on a traditional pit loom in Bhadohi, the weaving belt of Uttar
Pradesh, India, where our family has worked at the loom for three generations.
Each colour block is built weft by weft — the weaver counts the picks and changes
the yarn by hand at every colour boundary, which is why the check lines land
square across the whole field. The horizontal ribbing you can see in the weave is
the weft structure itself, not a printed or applied texture. A rug of this size
takes an experienced weaver several days at the loom. Edges are finished with a
woven selvedge; there is no fringe and no latex backing.

SIZES
Available from 3x5 ft (90x150 cm) up to 10x14 ft (300x420 cm), plus runners and
custom dimensions. Choose your size from the dropdown, or message us for a size
that isn't listed — the loom will take almost anything.

STYLING & PLACEMENT
The mustard field with sky blue and burgundy reads warm and graphic at once,
which makes it a good anchor for mid-century modern, Scandinavian, Bauhaus-
inspired, eclectic and modern farmhouse rooms. Over light oak or herringbone
parquet the golds pick up the floor tone; over grey concrete or pale tile the
blues come forward instead.

In a living room, a 8x10 ft sits with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on
the rug. Under a queen bed, choose 8x10 ft to leave a walking margin on three
sides; a king bed wants 9x12 ft. For a six-seat dining table, 8x10 ft lets chairs
pull back without dropping off the edge. In an entryway or galley kitchen, a
runner works because the flat profile won't trip anyone.

GIFTING
It makes a solid housewarming or first-apartment gift — colourful enough to feel
like a real present, and low-profile enough to work in almost any rented room.

CARE, VARIATION & LONGEVITY
Vacuum with the beater bar off or using suction only. Blot spills immediately
with a clean cloth and cold water; for anything set-in, use a professional rug
cleaner. Rotate the rug twice a year and flip it once a year so both faces wear
evenly. A thin non-slip pad is recommended — flatweaves have no weight of pile to
hold them down and will creep on a hard floor without one.

Because this is handmade, expect small variation: colour tone can shift slightly
between dye lots, and finished dimensions may vary by up to 2–3% from the size
ordered. Slight ridging or a soft fold line from rolling will relax within a week
or two of the rug lying flat. Cared for properly, a cotton flatweave of this
weight holds up well for many years of everyday use.

FAQ
Will it shed?
No. There is no pile, so there is nothing to shed. You may see a few loose fibre
ends in the first week of vacuuming, which is normal and stops quickly.

Is it pet and kid friendly?
Yes, and it's one of the better choices for both. Claws don't snag on a flat
surface the way they do on loop pile, and the low profile means spills sit on the
surface where you can blot them rather than sinking into a pile.

Does it come with a rug pad?
No, a pad is not included. We strongly recommend adding a thin non-slip pad,
especially on wood, tile or laminate.

How long does a made-to-order rug take?
Custom sizes are typically woven and dispatched in 3–4 weeks. Listed stock sizes
ship faster — check the shipping estimate on this listing.

Can I get a custom size or a different colourway?
Yes to both. Message us with your dimensions, and tell us which of the colours
you want emphasised or dropped.

Will the colours look exactly like the photos?
Very close, but screens vary. Photographed in natural daylight with no colour
filters; the mustard reads slightly warmer in incandescent light at home.

Message us with your room measurements and we'll tell you which size to order.
Rug Care & Maintenance

Vacuum gently once or twice a week using a brush attachment — avoid rotary brush heads. Do not machine wash. For spills, blot immediately with a dry cloth; never rub. With simple care, your handmade wool rug will stay beautiful for decades.

Questions, Answered

Everything you want to know before you buy

Handmade rugs raise real questions — about wool, shedding, sizing and shipping. Here are ours, answered plainly.

Can I order a custom size or colour?
Are your rugs safe for pets and children?
Do I need a rug pad underneath it?
How should I clean and care for my rug?
Do wool rugs shed, and for how long?
Can I order a custom size or colour?

Yes. Almost everything we make can be woven to your dimensions and palette, including round, runner and oversized pieces. Custom orders take about 4-6 weeks. Send us your measurements and a colour reference to start.

Are your rugs safe for pets and children?

Yes. Our rugs are crafted using natural wool and non-toxic dyes without chemical-backed coatings. Wool is naturally stain-resistant and flame-resistant, making it a great choice for family homes. If a loop is accidentally pulled by a pet, simply trim it carefully with scissors rather than pulling it.

Do I need a rug pad underneath it?

We highly recommend using one. A quality rug pad helps prevent slipping, protects your flooring, adds extra comfort underfoot, and extends the lifespan of your rug by reducing wear from daily foot traffic. It's especially beneficial on hardwood, tile, and other smooth surfaces.

How should I clean and care for my rug?

Vacuum weekly on a low setting. Blot spills immediately with a dry cloth — press, don't rub. For anything that has set, use a professional rug cleaner. Avoid soaking the rug, bleach, and steam cleaning.

Do wool rugs shed, and for how long?

Yes, light shedding is normal during the first few weeks. These are loose fibers left from the finishing process and will gradually reduce with regular use. Vacuum gently using a suction-only setting (without a rotating beater bar), and shedding typically settles within about a month. It is a natural characteristic of quality wool rugs.

No question matches that. Message us and we'll answer it directly.
