Handwoven wool dhurrie rug in ivory, sage green and terracotta — a flatweave
area rug with horizontal stripe bands and rows of solid squares, woven by hand
on a traditional loom. There is no pile and no backing: the pattern is built
into the weave itself, so the rug sits flat and low against the floor. If you

WHY A FLATWEAVE
A flatweave is woven, not tufted or knotted, which means the surface stays low
and dense instead of plush. That gives you three practical things: it clears
low door swings, dining chairs slide over it instead of catching, and it layers
easily on top of carpet or under a larger jute rug. It also sheds far less than
a pile rug and takes daily traffic well. What it does not give you is
underfoot softness — if you want a thick, sink-in feel, a hand-tufted rug is
the better choice, and we make those too.

MATERIALS & CRAFTSMANSHIP
Handspun wool weft on a cotton warp. The wool is dyed in small batches, then
woven pick by pick on a pit loom — each colour block and square is placed by
hand as the weaver builds the rug row by row, which is why the square edges
have that soft stepped outline rather than a printed hard line. A rug this size
takes a skilled weaver several weeks. Our workshop sits in Bhadohi, in the
carpet belt of Uttar Pradesh, where this weaving has been in our family for
three generations. Nothing here is printed and nothing is machine-made.

STYLING & PLACEMENT
The ivory ground keeps a room open while the terracotta and sage do the work,
so it sits comfortably in Scandinavian, modern farmhouse, Japandi, mid-century
and modern boho interiors. Over oak or walnut floors the warm rust reads
especially well.
• Living room — 5x8 ft with the front legs of the sofa on the rug; 8x10 ft if
you want all furniture legs on.
• Bedroom — 6x9 ft under a queen bed leaves roughly 18-24 in of rug on both
sides; 8x10 ft for a king.
• Dining — pick a size that leaves at least 24 in past the table edge, so a
6-seat table usually needs 8x10 ft. The flat surface is the reason a
flatweave works here at all.
• Entry and hallway — the runner sizes, low profile clears the door.

GIFTING
Wool flatweaves are a safe housewarming or wedding gift because they suit
almost any floor and don't commit the room to a strong style. Message us if you

CARE, VARIATION & LONGEVITY
Vacuum with the beater bar off or on suction only. Rotate every six months for
even wear. Blot spills immediately with a dry cloth and cold water; no bleach,
no soaking. Professional cleaning once every year or two. Minor shedding settles
within a few weeks and is normal for wool. Because this is handwoven, expect a
size tolerance of about 1-2% and small variations in dye tone and square
placement — those are marks of hand production, not defects. A quality rug pad
is strongly recommended: it stops slipping, adds cushion, and materially extends
the life of the rug. Cared for, a wool flatweave lasts decades.

FAQ
Will it shed?
Lightly, for the first few weeks. Flatweaves shed far less than tufted or
shag rugs because there is no cut pile.

Is it pet and kid friendly?
Yes. There's no pile for claws to catch and no latex layer to break down. Wool
naturally resists soiling, and the ivory ground spot-cleans well if you act fast.

Does it come with a pad?
No, the pad is sold separately, but we recommend using one — especially on
hardwood, where a flatweave can slide.

How long does made-to-order take?
Typically 2-4 weeks to weave depending on size, plus shipping. Stock sizes ship
sooner — message us for current lead time on the size you want.

Can I get a custom size or change the colours?
Yes. Custom dimensions, custom colourways, and runner or round versions of this
design are all possible. Send us your measurements.

Is it reversible?
Flatweaves of this type are usually usable on both faces, with the pattern
reading in a softer form on the reverse. Message us before ordering if you plan
to flip it and we'll confirm for this specific design.

Will the colours match what I see on screen?
Very closely, but screens vary. If exact colour matching matters for a project,
ask us for a yarn sample photo in daylight before you order.
