Description
SOUTHWESTERN FLATWEAVE WOOL KILIM RUG

A handwoven wool flatweave rug in a banded southwestern layout: rust and
burgundy stepped zigzags running across a cream-beige field, and a charcoal
centre band carrying three turquoise and ivory stepped diamonds. It is woven
flat on the loom, not tufted and not knotted, so it sits low, moves less, and
reads clean and graphic in a room rather than heavy.

WHY A FLATWEAVE
Flatweave means no pile. The wool is packed weft over warp so the pattern is
built into the structure of the cloth itself, which is why the motif edges step
rather than curve. The result is a low-profile rug that clears doors, slides
under dining chairs without catching, works well over underfloor heating, and
turns over to show the same design on the reverse. It is the practical choice
for entryways, kitchens, dining rooms and anywhere a plush rug would be a
nuisance — and it packs and ships flat.

MATERIALS AND CRAFTSMANSHIP
Woven in wool on a cotton warp by hand on a pit loom in Bhadohi, north India,
by weavers working in a family tradition three generations deep. Colours are
yarn-dyed before weaving, which is why the rust, charcoal and turquoise stay
saturated rather than sitting on the surface. A rug this size takes a weaver
weeks of continuous work — every stepped diamond and every zigzag is counted
out weft row by weft row, from memory and a drawing, with no shortcut for
getting a diamond to land centred.

SIZES
Made in the full standard grid from 3x5 ft (91x152 cm) up to 9x12 ft
(274x366 cm), including 4x6 ft (122x183 cm), 5x8 ft (152x244 cm), 6x9 ft
(183x274 cm) and 8x10 ft (244x305 cm), plus runners from 2.5x8 ft
(76x244 cm) to 2.5x12 ft (76x366 cm). Choose from the size dropdown — custom
sizes are woven to order.

STYLING AND PLACEMENT
Built for southwestern, desert modern, boho, mid-century and warm-minimal
rooms, and it earns its keep in a plain room that needs one strong graphic
piece. The cream ground keeps it light; the rust and charcoal give it enough
weight to anchor leather, cane, walnut and black metal furniture. In a living
room, an 8x10 ft lets all front legs sit on the rug; a 5x8 ft works as a
float in front of a sofa. For a queen bed use 8x10 ft to get walk-around
margin, or run a 2.5x8 ft runner down each side. For a six-seat dining table
use 8x10 ft so chairs stay on the rug when pushed back. In an entry or
galley kitchen, the runner is the low-profile answer.

GIFTING
It is a solid housewarming or wedding gift for someone setting up a first
proper home — flat-packed, hard to get wrong tonally, and it looks like more
thought than it costs you to explain.

CARE, VARIATION AND LONGEVITY
Vacuum with suction only, no beater bar, and go with the weave rather than
against it. Blot spills immediately with a dry cloth; spot clean with cool
water and mild soap; professional clean for anything set in. Rotate every six
months for even wear. Wool flatweaves shed very little compared to pile rugs,
and any light shedding settles within a few weeks. Because this is handwoven,
expect minor variation in dye lot and up to 2-3% variation in finished
dimensions — that is the signature of a loom, not a defect. Use a non-slip
rug pad: it stops creep, cushions the low profile and adds years of life.
Cared for, a wool flatweave of this density lasts decades.

FAQ
Will it shed? Very little. There is no pile to shed from, so any loose fibre
clears within the first few weeks of vacuuming.

Is it pet and kid friendly? Yes. The flat surface has no loops for claws to
catch and no pile to crush, which makes it one of the better choices for
high-traffic rooms with animals and children.

Is it reversible? Yes — the design reads on both faces of a weft-faced
flatweave, with the reverse slightly softer in contrast. Turn it to even out
wear.

Does it come with a rug pad? No, the pad is sold separately. We strongly
recommend one for a flatweave, particularly over tile or hardwood.

Can I get a custom size or colourway? Yes. We weave to order in custom
dimensions and can adjust the palette. Message us with your measurements and
we will quote lead time and price.

Will the colours match my screen? Very closely, but screens vary in warmth
and brightness. Message us for additional daylight photos before you order if
the exact rust or turquoise matters to your scheme.

How long does made-to-order take? Message us with your size and we will
confirm current weaving and shipping time before you buy.

Questions, Answered

Everything you want to know before you buy

Handmade rugs raise real questions — about wool, shedding, sizing and shipping. Here are ours, answered plainly.

Can I order a custom size or colour?
Are your rugs safe for pets and children?
Do I need a rug pad underneath it?
How should I clean and care for my rug?
Do wool rugs shed, and for how long?
Can I order a custom size or colour?

Yes. Almost everything we make can be woven to your dimensions and palette, including round, runner and oversized pieces. Custom orders take about 4-6 weeks. Send us your measurements and a colour reference to start.

Are your rugs safe for pets and children?

Yes. Our rugs are crafted using natural wool and non-toxic dyes without chemical-backed coatings. Wool is naturally stain-resistant and flame-resistant, making it a great choice for family homes. If a loop is accidentally pulled by a pet, simply trim it carefully with scissors rather than pulling it.

Do I need a rug pad underneath it?

We highly recommend using one. A quality rug pad helps prevent slipping, protects your flooring, adds extra comfort underfoot, and extends the lifespan of your rug by reducing wear from daily foot traffic. It's especially beneficial on hardwood, tile, and other smooth surfaces.

How should I clean and care for my rug?

Vacuum weekly on a low setting. Blot spills immediately with a dry cloth — press, don't rub. For anything that has set, use a professional rug cleaner. Avoid soaking the rug, bleach, and steam cleaning.

Do wool rugs shed, and for how long?

Yes, light shedding is normal during the first few weeks. These are loose fibers left from the finishing process and will gradually reduce with regular use. Vacuum gently using a suction-only setting (without a rotating beater bar), and shedding typically settles within about a month. It is a natural characteristic of quality wool rugs.

No question matches that. Message us and we'll answer it directly.
