Description

This sage gray Oushak style hand knotted wool rug sets rust, gold, ivory and slate blue flowers on a soft sage gray field, linked by fine ivory vines and framed by a wide ivory floral border. It is made by hand in Bhadohi, India, in wool. The muted ground keeps it calm and easy to live with, while the warm florals add depth to traditional and transitional rooms.

Why this construction

Hand-knotting ties each knot to the foundation threads by hand, which gives a dense, durable pile that can last for decades with ordinary care. It is slower than tufting and shows in the fine vine work and detailed blossoms across the field.

Materials and craftsmanship

The pile is wool, dyed in a sage gray, ivory, rust, gold and slate blue palette. Natural tonal variation (abrash) in the gray field is part of the character of a handmade rug. The open-field floral design follows the Oushak tradition and is woven by artisans in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, a long-established hand-knotting centre. It is a new rug, not an antique.

For a queen bed, choose 8x10 ft (6x9 ft for a compact room). For a king bed, choose 9x12 ft. A 6-seat dining table suits 8x10 ft. A standard 3-seat sofa layout suits 8x10 ft, or 6x9 ft in a smaller room.

Styling and placement

Sage gray and ivory sit easily with oak floors, oatmeal and bouclé upholstery, warm wood, rust cushions and brass in transitional, Japandi-leaning and modern traditional rooms. In a living room, keep at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug. In a dining room, size it so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.

Care, variation and longevity

Vacuum regularly without a beater bar, blot spills quickly and rotate the rug every six to twelve months. Expect some loose wool fibre in the first weeks, which is normal for a new wool rug. Colour and size vary slightly between handmade pieces. With good care, a hand-knotted wool rug can last for decades. Use a felt-and-rubber rug pad.

Frequently asked questions

Will this rug shed?

New wool rugs shed loose surface fibres for the first few weeks, then settle. Regular vacuuming without a beater bar reduces it.

Is it pet-safe?

Wool is a resilient natural fibre and the rug uses no latex backing. Blot accidents promptly and have it professionally cleaned if stained.

Is the field more gray or green?

The field is a soft gray with a sage undertone, which reads warmer in daylight and grayer in cool light.

Can I get a custom size?

Yes, custom sizes can be requested. Send us your dimensions and we will confirm price and timing.

Will the colours match my screen?

Screens vary, and handmade dyeing varies slightly between pieces. We can send a close-up photo of the actual rug on request.

Need a size that isn't listed? Send us your room dimensions through the contact form and we will quote a custom hand-knotted size.

Rug Care & Maintenance

Vacuum gently once or twice a week using a brush attachment — avoid rotary brush heads. Do not machine wash. For spills, blot immediately with a dry cloth; never rub. With simple care, your handmade wool rug will stay beautiful for decades.

Questions, Answered

Everything you want to know before you buy

Handmade rugs raise real questions — about wool, shedding, sizing and shipping. Here are ours, answered plainly.

Can I order a custom size or colour?
Are your rugs safe for pets and children?
Do I need a rug pad underneath it?
How should I clean and care for my rug?
Do wool rugs shed, and for how long?
Can I order a custom size or colour?

Yes. Almost everything we make can be woven to your dimensions and palette, including round, runner and oversized pieces. Custom orders take about 4-6 weeks. Send us your measurements and a colour reference to start.

Are your rugs safe for pets and children?

Yes. Our rugs are crafted using natural wool and non-toxic dyes without chemical-backed coatings. Wool is naturally stain-resistant and flame-resistant, making it a great choice for family homes. If a loop is accidentally pulled by a pet, simply trim it carefully with scissors rather than pulling it.

Do I need a rug pad underneath it?

We highly recommend using one. A quality rug pad helps prevent slipping, protects your flooring, adds extra comfort underfoot, and extends the lifespan of your rug by reducing wear from daily foot traffic. It's especially beneficial on hardwood, tile, and other smooth surfaces.

How should I clean and care for my rug?

Vacuum weekly on a low setting. Blot spills immediately with a dry cloth — press, don't rub. For anything that has set, use a professional rug cleaner. Avoid soaking the rug, bleach, and steam cleaning.

Do wool rugs shed, and for how long?

Yes, light shedding is normal during the first few weeks. These are loose fibers left from the finishing process and will gradually reduce with regular use. Vacuum gently using a suction-only setting (without a rotating beater bar), and shedding typically settles within about a month. It is a natural characteristic of quality wool rugs.

No question matches that. Message us and we'll answer it directly.
