Description
Turn a hallway or galley kitchen into a flowing stream. This koi fish runner rug follows a long, winding teal pond down its length, where four hand-carved koi swim one after another: a red-and-white kohaku, a black-and-red showa, a pure white ogon and a lucky golden yamabuki. Taupe lily pads float at each end, and bands of seafoam and sage ripples spread out to a deep olive edge cut in soft waves. Hand tufted in wool, it brings calm and a touch of good fortune to everyday walkways.
Materials and craftsmanship
Each runner is hand tufted in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, India. Wool yarn is punched by hand through a cotton cloth stretched on a frame, then sheared to an even, dense pile. The outlines are hand carved, which lifts each shape slightly above its neighbour so the design reads crisply underfoot. Finally the runner is backed with cotton canvas and the edges are hand-bound for a clean, fringe-free finish that suits busy kitchens and hallways.

Styling and placement
It looks beautiful in a galley kitchen with light oak cabinets, stone or travertine floors, concrete counters, matte black taps and a bonsai on the worktop. It also turns a plain hallway, landing or entryway into a Japandi garden path, and suits organic modern, zen and minimalist homes.
Choosing your runner size
Leave 10–15 cm (4–6 in) of floor showing on each side of a hallway runner, and 30–45 cm (12–18 in) at each end. In a galley kitchen, a 2.6 ft wide runner suits most aisles; choose 3 ft for wider walkways and 2 ft for narrow halls. Shaped runners are measured at their longest and widest points. Need a length not listed? We tuft custom sizes to order.
Care and longevity
Vacuum regularly with suction only, beater bar off. Blot spills straight away with a clean cloth and spot clean with a mild wool-safe detergent. A thin rug pad stops it sliding on hard floors, and turning it end to end every few months keeps wear even. New wool sheds a little loose fibre for the first few weeks; this settles with regular vacuuming. Allow slight colour variation between batches and a size tolerance of up to 2%.
Frequently asked questions
Does the runner have a direction?
Yes. The koi swim towards the end with the two small lily pads, so many people lay that end towards the window or the far end of the hall, as if the fish are swimming away from the door.
What do the koi colours mean?
In Japanese tradition the golden koi stands for wealth, the red-and-white kohaku for love, the black showa for strength through change, and the white koi for purity and new beginnings.
How long does it take to make?
10 to 15 days from order, as each runner is tufted to order. Shipping is added on top.
Can I order a custom size or colour?
Yes. Message us with your hallway or kitchen measurements and we will send a quote and colour layout.
Rug Care & Maintenance
Vacuum gently once or twice a week using a brush attachment — avoid rotary brush heads. Do not machine wash. For spills, blot immediately with a dry cloth; never rub. With simple care, your handmade wool rug will stay beautiful for decades.

Questions, Answered
Everything you want to know before you buy
Handmade rugs raise real questions — about wool, shedding, sizing and shipping. Here are ours, answered plainly.
Are your rugs safe for pets and children?
Yes. Our rugs are crafted using natural wool and non-toxic dyes without chemical-backed coatings. Wool is naturally stain-resistant and flame-resistant, making it a great choice for family homes. If a loop is accidentally pulled by a pet, simply trim it carefully with scissors rather than pulling it.
Do I need a rug pad underneath it?
We highly recommend using one. A quality rug pad helps prevent slipping, protects your flooring, adds extra comfort underfoot, and extends the lifespan of your rug by reducing wear from daily foot traffic. It's especially beneficial on hardwood, tile, and other smooth surfaces.
Can I order a custom size or colour?
Yes. Almost everything we make can be woven to your dimensions and palette, including round, runner and oversized pieces. Custom orders take about 4-6 weeks. Send us your measurements and a colour reference to start.
How should I clean and care for my rug?
Vacuum weekly on a low setting. Blot spills immediately with a dry cloth — press, don't rub. For anything that has set, use a professional rug cleaner. Avoid soaking the rug, bleach, and steam cleaning.
Do wool rugs shed, and for how long?
Yes, light shedding is normal during the first few weeks. These are loose fibers left from the finishing process and will gradually reduce with regular use. Vacuum gently using a suction-only setting (without a rotating beater bar), and shedding typically settles within about a month. It is a natural characteristic of quality wool rugs.
No question matches that. Message us and we'll answer it directly.
