Description

Light, calm and quietly charming. This ivory fish runner rug lines up eleven folk-art fish on a soft cream field, each patterned differently in rust, sage, denim blue, blush, mustard and charcoal with dotted and striped bodies. A slim zigzag border in rust and moss traces the edges, and a full hand-tied fringe finishes each end. Knotted by hand in wool in the gabbeh tradition, it adds gentle colour and character without overwhelming a neutral room.

Why hand knotted

Hand knotting is the oldest and most durable way to make a rug, which matters most in a hallway or kitchen where a runner takes daily foot traffic. Each wool knot is tied by hand around a cotton warp, row by row, then beaten down and clipped. There is no latex, no scrim and no backing cloth: the knots are the structure, so the pattern shows on the reverse and the fringe is the warp itself. No glue to dry out, no delamination, and a runner that can be washed, repaired and re-fringed for decades.

Materials and craftsmanship

The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted in the loose, slightly shaggy gabbeh manner and dyed in small batches, so the field shows a soft natural variation (abrash) that gives it depth. The foundation is cotton warp and weft. Each runner is woven in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, India, then hand clipped, washed, stretched and finished.

Styling and placement

It suits warm minimalist kitchens with light oak cabinets, stone counters and plaster walls, and sits beautifully on polished concrete or limestone. Equally at home in a Scandinavian hallway, a coastal entry or a Japandi-style space.

Choosing your runner size

Leave 10–15 cm (4–6 in) of floor showing on each side of a hallway runner, and 30–45 cm (12–18 in) at each end. In a galley kitchen, a 2.6 ft wide runner suits most aisles; choose 3 ft for wider walkways and 2 ft for narrow halls. Need a length not listed? We knot custom sizes to order.

Care and longevity

Vacuum with suction only, beater bar off, and avoid the fringe. Blot kitchen spills immediately with a clean cloth. Turn the runner end to end every few months so wear stays even, and use a thin rug pad to stop it sliding on hard floors. Professional washing every three to five years keeps it fresh. Allow slight colour variation between batches and a size tolerance of up to 2%.

Frequently asked questions

Is every fish the same?

No. Each fish is knotted by hand, so patterns, stripes and colours vary slightly from fish to fish and from the photos – part of the folk-art charm.

Is this rug good for a kitchen?

Yes. Dense wool pile is naturally stain and soil resistant, the textured field hides crumbs and footprints, and there is no backing to crack or peel when it is cleaned.

How long does it take to make?

10 to 15 days from order, as each runner is knotted to order. Shipping is added on top.

Can I order a custom size or colour?

Yes. Message us with your hallway or kitchen measurements and we will send a quote and colour layout.

Rug Care & Maintenance

Vacuum gently once or twice a week using a brush attachment — avoid rotary brush heads. Do not machine wash. For spills, blot immediately with a dry cloth; never rub. With simple care, your handmade wool rug will stay beautiful for decades.

Questions, Answered

Everything you want to know before you buy

Are your rugs safe for pets and children?

Yes. Our rugs are crafted using natural wool and non-toxic dyes without chemical-backed coatings. Wool is naturally stain-resistant and flame-resistant, making it a great choice for family homes. If a loop is accidentally pulled by a pet, simply trim it carefully with scissors rather than pulling it.

Do I need a rug pad underneath it?

We highly recommend using one. A quality rug pad helps prevent slipping, protects your flooring, adds extra comfort underfoot, and extends the lifespan of your rug by reducing wear from daily foot traffic. It's especially beneficial on hardwood, tile, and other smooth surfaces.

Can I order a custom size or colour?

Yes. Almost everything we make can be woven to your dimensions and palette, including round, runner and oversized pieces. Custom orders take about 4-6 weeks. Send us your measurements and a colour reference to start.

How should I clean and care for my rug?

Vacuum weekly on a low setting. Blot spills immediately with a dry cloth — press, don't rub. For anything that has set, use a professional rug cleaner. Avoid soaking the rug, bleach, and steam cleaning.

Do wool rugs shed, and for how long?

Yes, light shedding is normal during the first few weeks. These are loose fibers left from the finishing process and will gradually reduce with regular use. Vacuum gently using a suction-only setting (without a rotating beater bar), and shedding typically settles within about a month. It is a natural characteristic of quality wool rugs.

No question matches that. Message us and we'll answer it directly.
