Description
Handwoven striped wool flatweave rug in ivory, charcoal, greige and camel, made
on a traditional pit loom in Bhadohi, India. This is a true flatweave dhurrie —
no pile, no glue, no backing — woven band by band so the stripe sits in the
cloth itself rather than being printed or tufted on top. It is the rug for a
room that needs grounding without weight.

WHY A FLATWEAVE
A flatweave sits low and flat, which makes it the practical choice under doors,
in entryways, beneath dining chairs that need to slide, and in layered setups
where a thick rug would crowd the floor. It has no latex adhesive and no
secondary backing, so there is nothing inside it to dry out, crumble or off-gas
over time. It is also lighter and easier to lift, shake out and move than a
tufted or knotted rug of the same size.

MATERIALS & CRAFTSMANSHIP
Woven in hand-spun wool, dyed in small batches so each colour carries slight
tonal movement rather than flat uniformity. The ivory and camel bands are woven
in a smooth weft-faced structure; the greige bands use a raised textured weave
that catches light differently across the day. The thin black pinstripes are
woven in as separate picks, not overprinted. Bhadohi has been a weaving centre
for generations, and this piece comes out of a family workshop working in that
tradition. A rug this size takes a weaver several days at the loom.

STYLING & PLACEMENT
The palette is warm neutral, so it works in Scandinavian, Japandi, modern
organic, coastal and minimalist interiors, and it softens mid-century and
industrial rooms without fighting them. In a living room, run the stripes across
the seating rather than into it, and choose a size that lets at least the front
legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug — 8 x 10 ft for most three-seater
layouts, 9 x 12 ft for open-plan. For a queen bed, 8 x 10 ft placed two-thirds
down the bed gives walking space on three sides; a king wants 9 x 12 ft. For a
six-seat dining table, 8 x 10 ft keeps chairs on the rug when pulled out. Runners
suit hallways, kitchen galleys and the side of a bed.

GIFTING
A neutral flatweave is one of the safer large gifts to give — it reads as
considered without imposing a colour scheme on someone else's home. Common for
housewarmings, weddings and first apartments.

CARE, VARIATION & LONGEVITY
Vacuum with the beater bar off or on a suction-only setting. Blot spills
immediately with a clean cloth and cold water; do not rub or soak. Rotate the rug
every six months so light and foot traffic wear it evenly. Professional cleaning
when it needs a full refresh. Wool flatweaves shed far less than tufted rugs, but
expect a little loose fibre in the first few weeks. Because this is handwoven,
size can vary by roughly 2 percent and colours carry small natural variation
between batches — that is the mark of a hand-loomed piece, not a defect. Use a
felt or rubber underlay: it stops slipping, adds cushion, and meaningfully
extends the life of a low-profile rug.

FAQ
Will it shed? Very little. It has no cut pile, so shedding is limited to some
loose fibre early on that settles with normal vacuuming.

Is it pet-safe? Yes. There is no latex adhesive in it. The flat surface holds
less hair than a plush pile, though claws can catch a pulled loop — trim any snag
level with scissors, never pull it.

Does it come with a pad? No, the pad is sold separately. We recommend one for
any flatweave, particularly on hard floors.

How long is made-to-order? Weaving and finishing typically takes 3–4 weeks, plus
shipping. Message us if you have a deadline and we will confirm before you order.

Can I get a custom size? Yes — any size, including runners and oversized pieces.
Send your measurements for a quote.

Will the colours match my screen? Closely, but screens vary. The base is a warm
ivory rather than a cool white. Ask us for a daylight photo or a yarn swatch if
you are matching to existing furniture.

Message us for a custom size, a different stripe layout, or a colourway matched
to your room.
Rug Care & Maintenance

Vacuum gently once or twice a week using a brush attachment — avoid rotary brush heads. Do not machine wash. For spills, blot immediately with a dry cloth; never rub. With simple care, your handmade wool rug will stay beautiful for decades.

Questions, Answered

Everything you want to know before you buy

Handmade rugs raise real questions — about wool, shedding, sizing and shipping. Here are ours, answered plainly.

Can I order a custom size or colour?
Are your rugs safe for pets and children?
Do I need a rug pad underneath it?
How should I clean and care for my rug?
Do wool rugs shed, and for how long?
Can I order a custom size or colour?

Yes. Almost everything we make can be woven to your dimensions and palette, including round, runner and oversized pieces. Custom orders take about 4-6 weeks. Send us your measurements and a colour reference to start.

Are your rugs safe for pets and children?

Yes. Our rugs are crafted using natural wool and non-toxic dyes without chemical-backed coatings. Wool is naturally stain-resistant and flame-resistant, making it a great choice for family homes. If a loop is accidentally pulled by a pet, simply trim it carefully with scissors rather than pulling it.

Do I need a rug pad underneath it?

We highly recommend using one. A quality rug pad helps prevent slipping, protects your flooring, adds extra comfort underfoot, and extends the lifespan of your rug by reducing wear from daily foot traffic. It's especially beneficial on hardwood, tile, and other smooth surfaces.

How should I clean and care for my rug?

Vacuum weekly on a low setting. Blot spills immediately with a dry cloth — press, don't rub. For anything that has set, use a professional rug cleaner. Avoid soaking the rug, bleach, and steam cleaning.

Do wool rugs shed, and for how long?

Yes, light shedding is normal during the first few weeks. These are loose fibers left from the finishing process and will gradually reduce with regular use. Vacuum gently using a suction-only setting (without a rotating beater bar), and shedding typically settles within about a month. It is a natural characteristic of quality wool rugs.

No question matches that. Message us and we'll answer it directly.

This rug's warm neutral palette and minimalist striped design complement Scandinavian, Japandi, coastal, and industrial styles, softening spaces without overpowering them, making it perfect for modern interiors.
Is the Ivory Black Striped Flatweave suitable for high-traffic areas or homes with pets?
Yes, this flatweave wool rug is durable and holds less pet hair than plush piles, and since it contains no latex adhesive, it is pet-safe. Its low profile makes it practical for everyday use.
How should I care for and maintain the flatweave rug to ensure its longevity?
Vacuum with the beater bar off or on a suction-only setting, and blot spills immediately with a cold, damp cloth. Rotate the rug every six months and consider professional cleaning for a full refresh.
Can I customize the size or stripe layout of the Ivory Black Striped Flatweave wool rug?
Yes, custom sizes and stripe layouts are available. You can message the seller with your measurements for a tailored quote, including runners and oversized options.
What are the considerations when placing this flatweave rug in different rooms?
For living rooms, place the rug so that at least the front legs of furniture sit on it; for bedrooms, a size like 8x10 ft under a queen bed works well; and in dining areas, an 8x10 ft size can keep chairs on the rug when pulled out.
