This koi pond lotus rug circles seven hand-carved koi in red, white, black and gold around a deep teal pool, with soft blush-pink lotus flowers and olive lily pads floating at the edges. Rings of seafoam and sage water fade out to a rich olive border, all cut in a flowing, irregular pond shape. Hand tufted in wool, every fin, scale pattern and petal is carved for real depth.

Materials and craftsmanship

Each rug is hand tufted in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, India. Wool yarn is punched by hand through a cotton cloth stretched on a frame, then sheared to a dense, even pile. Every koi, fin and ripple is then hand carved, lifting each shape slightly above its neighbour so the design reads like a sculpture underfoot. The shaped edge is cut and bound by hand, and the rug is backed with cotton canvas.

Specifications

Construction

Hand tufted, hand carved

Pile material

100% wool

Backing

Cotton canvas backing

Design

Koi pond with seven carved koi, lotus flowers and lily pads around a deep centre pool; irregular pond-shaped edge

Colours

Olive green, sage, seafoam, deep teal, red, white, black, gold, blush pink

Pile height

About 12 mm

Edge finish

Hand-cut shaped edge, hand-bound, no fringe

Origin

Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, India

Production

Made to order – 10 to 15 days

Styling and placement

It makes a striking centrepiece under a curved bouclé sofa with blush and olive cushions, stone side tables and a bonsai or two. As a guide, 5x7 ft suits a reading corner or bedside, 6x9 ft sits in front of a sofa, and 8x10 ft or larger lets the front legs of all seating rest on the rug. Need a size or colour not listed? We tuft custom pieces to order.

Care and longevity

Vacuum regularly with suction only, beater bar off. Blot spills straight away with a clean cloth and spot clean with a mild wool-safe detergent. Use a rug pad on hard floors and rotate the rug every few months so wear and sunlight stay even. New wool sheds a little loose fibre for the first few weeks; this settles with regular vacuuming. Allow slight colour variation between batches and a size tolerance of up to 2%.

Frequently asked questions

Why lotus flowers and koi together?

In Asian art the lotus rises clean from muddy water and stands for purity and new beginnings, while koi represent good fortune and perseverance.
